The village St. Jacobs was originally settled by Mennonites from Pennsylvania after the American Revolution. Originally it was called Jakobstettel or “little town of many Jacobs”. Today, horse drawn carriages are still a familiar sight on village streets which are lined with more then 100 shops of local retailers and artisans.
On Thursdays and Saturdays (Tuesdays June thru August) just 2 kilometers south of town shoppers can hunt for bargains at the St. Jacobs Farmers Market and Flea Market where food, clothing, and many locally handmade items are sold. Picnic areas and a petting farm are on the market grounds.
