The City of Guelph, is a vibrant community of over 100,000 people located in the heart of southern Ontario, just 100km west of Toronto. With one of the premier research universities, and a diverse variety of manufacturing, service, and high technology enterprises, it's also one of the fastest growing economic regions in Canada.
Founded in 1827 by Scottish novelist and first superintendent of the Canada Company, John Galt, Guelph was named in honour of the British royal family. Today Guelph is known for its stately architecture, century old limestone buildings and beautiful scenery due to it’s location on the junction of the Speed and Eramosa rivers.
Guelph is also the home of Col. John McCrae, born in 1872, who wrote the famous “In Flanders Fields”, the poem written in 1915 at the Second Battle of Ypres is most often read at Remembrance Day Ceremonies. His home, McCrae House is now a museum, located at 108 Water Street. Exhibits depict the family history and McCrae’s military and medical careers.
Guelph plays host to a variety of Music Festivals. Two key venues for entertainment are River Run Centre and the Guelph Sports and Entertainment Centre. Music festivals like the Guelph Spring Festival and the Hillside Festival offer music performances in unique settings. Hillside Festival, held at Guelph Lake Conservation Area headlines folk and alternative music as well as the spoken word. Music is enjoyed year round at bandshells, restaurants performance venues and clubs giving Guelph the much deserved name of “The City of Music”.
Visitors can also enjoy the riverfront park areas consisting of huge expanses of parkland with many walking trails and features like a Miniature railway and a floral clock or the Famous Arboretum. The Guelph Farmers Market, open every Saturday or the fascinating “Old Quebec Street” a spectacular covered street with an old world ambience and intriguing shops and boutiques are sure to please even the most discriminating shopper.
