Elora , Ontario was named after the Ellora Caves near Aurangabad, Maharashtra by Captain William Gilkison, a British officer and cousin of John Galt, who had recently returned from India.
The town is set amidst scenic rolling hills and fertile farmland. Elora is famous for its historic architecture, its artistic community, and its geographically significant Elora Gorge.
It is located along the Grand River, where the Irvine River meets and the Elora Gorge begins. The 80 ft. gorge, with its waterfall begins in the village and extends 4 k or 2.5 miles.
Elora is also home to the Elora Gorge Conservation Area. The park’s 202 hectares or 500 acres include unusual rock formations, a lake, and a limestone gorge.
The Grand River in this area is a popular fly fishing destination. The town owes its wonderful architecture to the many Scottish immigrants, who settled in the area in the early 1800’s. The village of Elora exudes charm and has an appealing and quaint village core.
