Neustadt , Ontario was named one of the ten prettiest towns in Canada by Harrowsmith magazine in their April 2000 edition. Founded in 1855 by David Winkler, Neustadt (German for new town) is the birthplace of Canada's 13th Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker. Generally a farming community, the town has some of the finest collections of fieldstone farmhouses, churches and schools in Western Ontario. Located just south of Hanover, Neustadt is set in picturesque rolling hills. A spring fed brewery that has been in existence since 1859 and is reputably the oldest operating original brewery building in Ontario is located here. Enjoy a leisurely drive in the countryside, some of the finest fieldstone farmhouses in western Ontario can be seen in the area and then relax at one of the areas restaurants or cafes.
